Cardinals, archbishops, and bishops from more than a dozen countries attended the Twenty Seventh Workshop for Bishops this week, sponsored by The National Catholic Bioethics Center in collaboration with the Knights of Columbus. The event held every two years is one of the largest gatherings of Catholic bishops outside of their own national conference meetings, and has been regularly held in Dallas for nearly 40 years.

This year's conference addressed foundational issues in health care reform, delivery, and the theology of Catholic health care. Additional presentations discussed the role of bishops in Catholic health care, as well as other key issues for Catholic identity and ethics in health care.

A number of distinguished scholars and speakers offered the presentations, and several staff members of the NCBC also addressed the gathered bishops, including NCBC President Dr. Joseph Meaney, and NCBC President Emeritus, Dr. John Haas.
Today the National Catholic Bioethics Center offered the first class of the semester at St. John's Seminary in Boston. The NCBC has proctored the bioethics class for more than 10 years, and this year 16 students from a number of dioceses are enrolled in the class. Father Tad presented the first lecture on the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, and offered a brief overview of the work and ministry of the NCBC. He will oversee the lectures during the remainder of the semester, with several invited lecturers also teaching the classes.
